Chatswood High School vs Killara High School: a parent comparison

Compare entry routes, extension programmes and the daily trip, with the details that change which school is a realistic option.

Chatswood High and Killara High offer different routes to academic extension. Chatswood has a selective stream with a maximum of 60 students per year group. Killara's Year 7 2027 HPGE programme requires confirmed enrolment before families receive testing information. That distinction matters before you compare either school's programmes.

This comparison brings together official school information checked on 26 September 2026. Use it to decide which entry route to investigate, what to ask about learning opportunities and whether the school day would work for your child. Programme lists establish options to discuss, not a measure of teaching quality or a promise of a place.

Chatswood and Killara side by side

The most useful comparison separates admission from opportunities available after enrolment. This September 2026 snapshot does that without assigning either school an overall score.

These are selected examples. A programme appearing in one column does not mean the other school lacks it. Request the current subject and activity information for the year your child would enter, particularly if one opportunity is driving your preference.

Check which entry route is available

For ordinary local enrolment, both schools currently describe catchment restrictions. Start with your exact home address, then confirm the position with the school. A suburb name or a nearby station does not establish that you can enrol at both.

Chatswood's general enrolment page requires 100 points of proof of address and says the process starts once the student lives in the intake area. A planned move is not enough to begin that process. Keep this local route separate from selective entry: Chatswood directs Year 7 selective applications through the Department of Education's High Performing Students Unit.

Killara has a specific instruction for families who have moved. For Year 7 2027, update the address with the child's current NSW government primary school before applying to Killara, or the application will be withdrawn. Its page also requires all supporting documents. If utility bills are not available yet, other documents from its checklist can be used, but the total must still reach 100 points.

For later selective entry at Chatswood, the published 2027 Years 8–11 application deadline was 24 July 2026 at 3 pm, and the Edutest test was on 15 August 2026. Those dates have passed. The school says some year groups may have no vacancies and offers can continue until the end of Term 1 2027 when places arise. Do not read an old application timetable as a currently open intake.

The key distinction is practical: Killara's Year 7 HPGE programme is not an alternative way around its enrolment requirements. Confirmed enrolment comes first. Record your child's actual route beside the school name, such as local enrolment or an existing selective application, so a preferred programme does not get mistaken for an available place.

Compare extension for the actual year group

Ask about the year your child will enter, not just whether a school has a gifted education programme. Killara's published plans distinguish Year 7 HPGE selection, two Year 8 HPGE classes from 2027, and later acceleration. They are different opportunities with different entry points.

Its Year 8 plans name Humanities and STEM classes, with applications from current Year 7 students in Term 3 2026. For selected current Year 9 students, it also advertises accelerated Legal Studies or Biology, completed across Years 10 and 11. Students can undertake one accelerated course. These details give you specific questions about eligibility, workload and subject combinations.

Take the same questions to both schools: How is a student identified for extension? Can a student join later? Which subjects are involved? What happens if the pace becomes unsuitable? At Chatswood, specify the stream you are asking about. At Killara, distinguish the Year 7 class, Year 8 options and later subject acceleration.

For a student interested in mathematics, Killara's Years 9–10 Paths Plus programme is another named option to discuss. Ask both schools what extra challenge looks like in ordinary lessons as well as in selected classes. A programme title alone cannot tell you whether the work will suit your child.

Test the school day, including activities

Chatswood publishes before-school and lunchtime activity rosters labelled Term 2 2026. Ask for the current roster before planning transport around an activity. Its music, dance, Duke of Edinburgh, outdoor education and Soundhouse pages provide starting points for that conversation. At Killara, ask about joining the published performing arts ensembles and how Year 10 peer support works for incoming Year 7 students.

Compare participation as well as the list: audition or beginner entry, rehearsal times, equipment, cost and clashes with other interests. Ask your child to choose an activity they would actually attend. Then test the trip on a day that includes it.

Use the campus entrance as the destination. Chatswood identifies 24 Centennial Avenue as its main entrance. Killara lists 15–39 Koola Avenue, publishes bus rank and CDC timetable information, and says parking is unavailable on school grounds. A trip to the suburb or station is only part of the school run.

For each realistic option, record the morning arrival, afternoon connection, walking section and backup pickup arrangement. Keep three separate notes for each school: the entry route confirmed by the school, the learning opportunities confirmed for your child's cohort, and a daily trip you have checked. That gives your family something more useful to compare than an unsupported winner. Save schools from their profiles first. Opening your shortlist does not automatically add them.
